Iceland: 5 Days of Fire and Ice with Travelling Mate
As the founder of Travelling Mate, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore 51 countries over the past 10+ years. And let me tell you, Iceland is a destination that truly captivates the soul. Recently, I embarked on a 5-day Icelandic adventure with three close friends, and it exceeded all expectations. This blog post is your guide to experiencing the magic of Iceland, based on our unforgettable journey.
Why Iceland? A Dream Destination for Every Traveller
Iceland’s allure lies in its dramatic landscapes – a symphony of volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and geothermal wonders. Whether you’re an avid adventurer, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking tranquility, Iceland has something to offer. Our 5-day trip proved that even a short time in this incredible country can leave a lasting impression.
Our Icelandic Basecamp: A Mountain Retreat
Forget cramped hotel rooms! For our Icelandic adventure, we opted for a spacious rental house nestled amidst snow-capped mountains and a rushing river. It was the perfect sanctuary, offering breathtaking views and a cozy atmosphere. Imagine waking up to the sound of the river and the sight of snow-dusted peaks – pure magic! (Pro tip: Consider renting a house for a more immersive experience, especially if travelling with a group. Check out Airbnb or VRBO.)
Day 1: Arrival and the Aurora Borealis Dance
Touching down at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), we picked up our trusty 4×4 rental car. This was crucial for navigating Iceland’s diverse terrain and venturing off the beaten path. Our first night was nothing short of spectacular. Right from our house, we witnessed the awe-inspiring dance of the Northern Lights. Emerald green and violet hues painted the night sky, a truly unforgettable welcome to Iceland. (Insider tip: September to April offers the best chances for Northern Lights sightings.)
Day 2: Golden Circle Wonders
The iconic Golden Circle was our focus for day two. Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcased the dramatic rift valley. The Geysir geothermal area reminded us of Iceland’s volcanic heart, with Strokkur erupting powerfully every few minutes. And Gullfoss waterfall? Simply majestic. The 4×4 gave us the freedom to explore these wonders at our own pace.
Day 3: South Coast Waterfalls and Black Sand Beaches
Iceland’s South Coast is a visual feast. We chased waterfalls, including the iconic Seljalandsfoss (where you can walk behind the cascading water!) and the powerful Skógafoss. The dramatic black sand beach of Reynisfjara, with its basalt columns and crashing waves, was a highlight. (Word of caution: Be mindful of sneaker waves at Reynisfjara!)
Day 4: Glaciers and Ice Lagoons
Day four took us to the breathtaking Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes drifted serenely towards the sea. The sheer scale and beauty of this natural wonder are humbling. (If you’re visiting in winter, consider an ice cave tour for an extra dose of adventure.)
Day 5: Whales and Farewell
Our final day was dedicated to whale watching. Setting sail from Reykjavík, we were thrilled to spot humpback and minke whales in their natural habitat. It was a truly special experience. (If time allows, explore Reykjavík’s charming streets before heading to the airport.)
Food, Glorious Food!
Icelandic cuisine is a delightful surprise. We sampled traditional dishes like hearty lamb stew and fresh seafood. We even discovered a fantastic Indian restaurant! To balance dining out, we stocked up on groceries at local markets and enjoyed cooking some meals in our cozy house. This not only saved us money but also added a homely touch to our adventure.
Tips for Your Icelandic Saga:
- 4×4 is King: Essential for navigating Iceland’s diverse landscapes.
- Book in Advance: Accommodation, tours, and especially your rental car.
- Pack for All Weather: Layers are your best friend in Iceland’s ever-changing climate.
- Be Flexible: Weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared to adjust your plans.
- Respect Nature: Iceland’s beauty is fragile. Leave no trace.
